The story deals with many forms of death. The deadly shadows is of a man who is killing women who he classifies as whores. Jesslyn bumps into the killer on two separate occasions.Jess dreams about her husband and kids. Jess dreams about the killer. The dreams and past memories are italicized.
Aidan is a renter staying for a few weeks while he renovates one of his hotels. Aidan is staying with Jess. They hit it off and begin dating. Aidan's mention of his job as a hotel owner is not the highlight of the story. It's used as a form of a means to an end to drag out the killer.
It's kinda a mystery with some romance. The romance is between Aidan and Jesslyn. The love scenes are mild not too graphic.
This is the first in a series about the wealthy Kinncaid brothers. Deadly Shadows includes Aidan. The next book will include Gavin. This one introduced all the brothers. Gavin is a doctor. Ian is some form of a detective. Brayden has a daughter. Brayden and Gavin are twins.
I enjoyed the story until it reached the point where the killer was still at large and getting careless. From this point on the story dragged. At about chapter seventeen the story lost its edge and became gloomy.

Jesslyn lost her husband and two kids in a car accident. A writer, she lives in Colorado now. Aiden rents her house while getting ready for the grand opening of his hotel. The night he arrives, Jesslyn finds one of her friends murdered and the killer rushes by but she doesn't get a look at him. She is almost killed by him now Aiden will do anything to keep her safe.
Jesslyn is a awesome heroine. She's courageous, smart, funny, and sarcastic. Aiden is tough, goes after what he wants, protective and hot. This story will keep you turning the pages to the very end.
Jaclyn Black thinks that she has lost everything that a woman can lose in her life. She lives a secluded live in a little town in Colorado, where she makes her living as a writer, which gives her the opportunity to withdraw in the "virtual lives" of her main characters, where she's the decision maker and shapes her characters' destiny, thus maintaining distance from any real emotions. Aiden Kinncaid is the CEO of a successful family business and has come to the little town to overview the final works done on an exclusive hotel owned by his family. The night destiny decides to take away even more from Jaclyn she "meets" Aiden and no matter how bad the circumstances of their first meeting, destiny decides to reward her and Aiden.
Jaclyn was an unusual heroine who was very troubled but tried to handle her blow of fate and managed in her own way to proceed with her life. Aiden was absolutely great. Finally a man who knows what he wants in life and pursues this with patience and intelligence. The sub characters were well elaborated and supported the plot perfectly, especially the Kinncaid family.
The story line was a classical one for books of this genre, though Clark managed to keep me focused and interested. There were some "paranormal elements" interlaced, which I usually don't appreciate, however, in this book these parts were essential to the plot and so well placed that they didn't bother me at all.
Don't miss this reading pleasure if you love this genre!
This was my first book by Jaycee Clark. It came up on my recommended reading list so I thought I'd give it a try. I was ready to read something other than vampire romances. ) I was a little apprehensive at first but the story gripped me right away. The story begins with Aiden, the hero renting a room at a house owned by Jesslyn Black while his hotel is being finished. Jess is an author living a rather unhappy life after her husband and children were killed in an auto accident 3 years before. She keeps everyone at arm's length and insists she's fine by herself. Aiden sees through the tough exterior. Tragedy strikes right away in the book when Jess' best friend is murdered and Jess is a witness, although she didn't see much. Aiden helps protect her, even though she doesn't think it's necessary.
The book is gripping from the start. We can read the thoughts of the killer as he tries to justify his kills in his own mind. We see the love blossoming between Jess and Aiden. Even the secondary characters have depth. And the sarcastic banter between Jess and Aiden is hysterical.
The only thing I did not like about the book was the ending. It left many unanswered questions. The epilogue usually wraps this up but in this case, it didn't. I feel like if the book had just been a chapter or two longer it would have been better. I was left feeling like we missed out on an important step in Aiden and Jess' love story. Don't misunderstand, the ending is good. I didn't figure out who the killer was until the author revealed his name. Still, after the big killer reveal, it felt like the story just ended.
Even with that little negative part, I still thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the rest in the series. Jaycee Clark may soon become my favorite author!
This was a good solid 4 stars. It is my first book by this author and I really liked that we didn't get to figure out the villain or the motive until the end. Although serial killers are not my favorite villains, this one was very creepy with no info to figure out who it was.

She is just coming out again after three years when a murdered takes the life of a good friend. Jesslyn happens to arrive just as the killer is finished and she sees him, and he sees her. But Jesslyn can't ID him. On returning home Jesslyn finds a strange man in her house. Aiden, her temporary renter has arrived a day early and all kinds of sparks start to fly, not to mention reawaked libidos for both of them. Jesslyn also awaken very protective feelings in Aiden that he doesn't know what to do with since Jesslyn is stubborn, abrasive and thinks she can take care of herself.
